ROCHESTER, MN - As the temperature rises in the summer, so does the number of car thefts.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau says car thefts increased by nearly 1.3 percent in 2012.
But in the Midwest, they went down.
Sergeant Robert Miller with the Rochester Police Department says people tend to get a little lax about keeping their vehicles locked up come summertime.
He recommends people always be alert.
"Well definitely lock your cars. Keep your windows rolled up and lock your cars. Don't keep anything of value in the vehicle. When you're going in a getting gas take your keys out of the ignition," said Miller.
According the study Rochester in 2012 had more than a 170 reported car thefts.
Waterloo had 130.
