MASON CITY, IA - The Mason City Fire Department welcomed two new firefighters to their staff on Friday morning.
Mike Hackbart and Mitchell Smith were initiated in as the newest members of the crew.
For Hackbart, this opportunity means he gets to come home.
"I won't be moving anywhere, I'm a Mason City boy," Hackbart said.
Both men have done an extensive amount of work with other departments and are excited to see what this new position has in store for the,
"The past three years I've been on a volunteer department and I always kind of thought I could do it and, I am," Hackbart said.
Hackbart and Smith received their badges in front of friends, family and other department leaders.
"I've been a junior firefighter since age 17 and I've been at a fire department, volunteer fire department for three years now," Smith said.
After all of that work Smith seems happy and excited to be in a more permanent job in a career he has always been passionate about.
"I like the combination department of the ambulance and the fire...you get to do all kinds of things and it's a very nice community," Smith said.
The Mason City community is happy to welcome them and put their trust in their work.
