KALONA, Iowa (AP) — A historic bridge in southeast Iowa has burned, and fire officials believe it was arson.
KCRG reports (http://bit.ly/16EzePk ) that the Bunker Mill Bridge burned Sunday morning and only charred remains of its wood deck remain. The bridge crosses over the English River.
Kalona Fire Chief Steve Yotty says his department was called to the scene around 5:30 a.m. on a rural road just south of town. The flames had spread out of control by the time firefighters arrived.
The Washington County Historical Society says the Bunker Mill, or Old River Bridge, was built in 1887. For years, it was the only way to travel between Kalona and nearby Richmond.
Yotty is asking anyone with information about the bridge burning to call the department or the state fire marshal.
