INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a 7-year-old girl has died in an apartment fire in northeast Iowa.
The Independence Fire Department says firefighters pulled the girl out of the apartment early Friday morning. The girls' family, including her parents and two siblings, managed to escape the blaze.
The fire, which completely engulfed part of the two-story building, was reported shortly after 4 a.m. Firefighters took an hour to completely douse the flames, which were visible through the roof.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/10pw3KP ) the family told firefighters they had been unable to find the girl during the fire. Assistant Fire Chief Rick Wulfekuhle says officials believe the girl, who was found dead, died of smoke inhalation.
