FOREST CITY, Iowa - Sheriff David Peterson along with the Winnebago County Supervisor are big supporters for the County to get a new jail.
The basement of the building has heavy flood damage, along with a tiny space for storage.
Mold and asbestos have been found throughout the building, that's according to the last three inspections.
Sheriff Peterson says if they build this new building, everyone will be under the same safe roof.
"The building is the house to the Sheriff's Office, Emergency Management, communications, plus the jail so we're not building a new jail we're building a new facility," said Peterson.
Sheriff Peterson pointed out that the jail can house nine inmates, and he's hoping the new building will be able to hold more.
A committee was also put together to help get the ball rolling on the plan.
That group is made up of different community members, so that the decision process will be a fair one.
"These are all people who pay taxes; these are all the people who are affected by the safety of the jail. They might know someone that's been in the jail. It's going to affect everyone," said Terry Durby, Winnebago County Supervisor.
Durby says the committee is looking at local jails in different counties, to see what they like, but he says what's important right now is to start planning.
