MASON CITY, Iowa - A new community alert system is launching today in Cerro Gordo county.
Code red alerts will be sent to people's phones and will let them know if there are any emergencies or important information in their area.
There is also a new weather alert folks can sign up for.
County officials are urging people to take advantage of the service.
"Get signed up it doesn't cost anything it's very simple to do again it's just another good way of notifying them just like weather radios, they're inexpensive, everybody should have them," say Steve O'Neil with Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management.
A test call should have gone out to those who have signed up for the code red alerts.
