KIMT NEWS 3 – For Maggie it was a life-saving decision.
"She woke me up and said she couldn't breathe. She was turning blue, so I got up and called 9-1-1," said Maggie.
Maggie said her mom was experiencing some difficulty breathing.
She says once the paramedics got to her home, it was their dedication that stood out.
"They saved my mom's life. I mean there were people calling them on their cell phones and they didn't even answer their phones," said Maggie.
And that's what Neil Maki, an EMT Firefighter in Mason City, says is all part of the job.
He's been a paramedic for more than three years, and says one lesson he's learned on the job is one many know as the golden rule.
"That it's very important to treat everyone with respect, and treat everyone like you would want your parents, son or daughter to be treated," said Maki.
Maggie stresses if it wasn't for paramedics like Maki, her life would be a lot different.
"They risk their lives everyday, to save other people. They spend time away from their family to take care of other people, they do an awful lot," said Maggie.
And its gratitude like Maggie has for them that keep Maki loving his job everyday.
"There's pay compensation and retirement, and all that stuff that rewards us, but a thanks from somebody is way more important than any of that other stuff," said Maki.
