MASON CITY, IA - A North Iowa murder trial is underway as day one of witness testimony begins.
Aaron Harris is standing trial. He's accused of strangling his girlfriend Sarah Winters last July.
After opening statements, several witnesses are telling their version of what happened the day Sarah Winters was killed.
Witness, Hilton Ramlakhan said, "He asked me if I could help him and I said what? And I thought he was drunk from the sound of his voice, and said what did you do now?"
Hilton Ramlakhan was friends with Aaron Harris and says he received a disturbing phone call from the defendant that day.
Ramlakhan said, "He said, to me he killed Sarah and I didn't believe him. And I said, 'Are you sure?' And he said, yes he killed her. I said, 'How did you do it?' And he said he choked her."
Hilton asked if he should call the police, he says Harris then switched his story and played it all off as a prank.
Ramlakhan said, "He just laughed out loud and that's he's just joking and I said, 'So where is she?' And he said 'Oh she's just in bed now sleeping or on the floor somewhere."
Hilton then called Vickie Johnson. Her ex-boyfriend, Chris, lived in the same building as Harris.
Johnson said, "He said that Aaron killed Sarah. Was laughing a crying and I didn't think much of it."
Vickie and her teen daughter went over to the house to check on things. The young girl went inside and couldn't find Chris, but saw something else instead.
"I ran down the carpet steps and I looked over and seen him dragging out her body."
Vickie says her daughter left the building in shock.
She said, "Mama we gotta get out of here because, I just saw Aaron dragging Sarah's body by her feet and there's blood coming out of her mouth."
The mother and daughter then called the police and an investigation in Winter's death began.
