WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A 32-year-old Waterloo woman has been given probation after being convicted of stealing from her father's estate.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says (http://bit.ly/184cOtN ) Essie Cooper entered an Alford plea in Black Hawk County District Court earlier this week. In an Alford plea, a defendant doesn't admit the crime but does acknowledge prosecutors likely can prove the charge.
Elias Grover Jr. died in 2007, and Cooper was appointed executor of his estate. Authorities say she stole about $140,000 from the estate at the expense of other family members but shared about $20,000 with her mother. Her mother is 55-year-old Dorothy Cooper, who was sentenced in August.
Judge David Staudt sentenced Essie Cooper to 10 years in prison suspended to two to five years of probation and ordered her to pay restitution.
