KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a car bomb and gun attack outside an Afghan intelligence office today that killed four soldiers and wounded more than 80 people.
It happened in eastern Wardak province, 25 miles from Kabul. A spokesman for the provincial governor says soldiers guarding the compound managed to kill five attackers. The car bomber also died.
Meanwhile, Afghan officials are accusing NATO of killing civilians in an airstrike in Kunar province yesterday that left at least 10 dead.
NATO says it carried out a “precision strike” that killed 10 “enemy forces,” but had no reports of any civilians dying. A spokeswoman says NATO is still investigating the matter. She wouldn’t comment on whether a drone was used.
Tensions also arose today between the U.S. and Afghan governments over a remark by the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In a recent interview with Voice of America’s Deewa news service, James Dobbins said that Afghanistan is already experiencing “a civil war.”
