LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) — The search for 40 people still missing from the weekend derailment and explosion on a runaway oil train isn’t the only task facing crews today in Quebec.
They’re also trying to contain some 27,000 gallons of light crude that spilled from the tankers and made its way into nearby waterways. Floating barriers have been set up to stop the oil from heading downstream.
The oil has reached a nearby town, and there are fears it could flow into the St. Lawrence River all the way to Quebec City.
A spokesman for Quebec’s environment ministry says officials remain hopeful that they can contain more than 85 percent of the spill.
