ROCKWELL, IA--Kollin Ellis is in the middle of his first RAGBRAI. “It's crowded, there's a lot of folks but it's fun,” said Ellis.

But unfortunately he can count himself among the ride's injured riders. “I was kind of getting ready to get off my bike and he didn't see that I was slowing down I guess was probably the best way to explain it, just bumped and I fell off my clip,” he said.

“Most of the things we've been seeing are a lot of overuse injuries,” said Dr. Christopher Hogrefe. “As you can imagine the same motion across 472 miles will present some aches and strains across the body so a lot of knee injuries, Achilles injuries, those types of things.”

Doctor Hogrefe says it seems the ambulances have been busy during this year's ride.  “They've been called to a large number of events, I mean not a tremendous number but more than I recall in the past,” he said.

With so many riders, the route is sometimes crowded and that's when accidents can happen. “It gets crowded, you know there’s bound to be accidents but it can be dangerous if people don't pay attention,” said Ellis.

The good news is it sounds like there haven't been many serious situations.

Ellis, for example, is already back on the bike. “Got her taped up, cleaned up and everything like that, the docs are great, took care of me,” he said.
