MASON CITY, IA - Thursday night's Republican debate brought up the question, should a candidate’s personal life come up in politics?
Republican Candidate Newt Gingrich was asked a question concerning comments made by his second wife. His wife recently claimed the former House Speaker asked her for an open marriage.
During the debate Gingrich denied the claim, adding that this type of question has no place in a political debate.
Local political expert John Schmaltz says Gingrich then went on the defensive against the media.
“He hit on this sensitive issue that's very very important to many republicans and conservatives, the belief that there's a bias in the media in how they approach candidates and issues.”
Schmaltz does believe that personal life can play a role in politics, but he also feels all politicians need to be scrutinized the same.
