MASON CITY, IA---Most of the year North Iowa dentists and their assistants worry about your teeth.

But on Thursday night they were busy giving out smiles and making some kids' Christmas wishes come true in Mason City.

Colton Pierce and his little sister Sydney were among them.

"It was amazing the joy on the child's face when he got to pick out something for his mom," said dental office receptionist Heidi Trask.

Trask did her best to keep the 4 and 8 year old Christmas combo on task

Their assignment from North Iowa Gives Smiles:

Spend $25 to buy gifts for a parent and guardian.

In this case, the children's mother.

"She likes presents," said Colton Pierce as he shopped.

The third grader said it is "awesome" he is able to give his mom something nice.

The money is part of a little more than $10,000 raised this year by the North Iowa Dental community.

Members shopped for 80 kids and parents last week and delivered gift baskets.

Now they're helping kids like Colton and Sydney find something for someone special.

Organizers of the event are hoping people watching them are inspired to help others as well.

"People would see and just think you know what I want to be a part of this I want to help and hopefully giving people ideas," said dental assistant Tara Smalley.

The group let Mason City elementary school principals chose 20 kids for this year's shopping spree

Colton and his sister ended up selecting a watch and necklace to give their mom.

"It makes me happy," said Pierce, who called it the fulfillment of a Christmas wish.

Only about half the children selected for North Iowa Gives Smiles shopping spree showed up Thursday night.

Organizers says they plan to seek out displaced Holcim Cement workers as they try to spread their spirit of giving.
