Mason City, IA
Former Iowa Hawkeye and Mason City basketball player Jeff Horner is hanging up the basketball shoes, at least for now.
Horner is taking an assistant varsity coaching position at West Des Moines Valley High School and an assistant coaching position at Grandview University
“I’m looking forward to starting a new career,” Jeff Horner said.
Horner’s decision to hang it up was not an easy one.
“It was very tough. I had a bunch of injuries last year, I broke my foot twice. I went over to Belgium this year and I wasn’t totally ready to go over there. I had to do it with the economy. Went over there and wasn’t really ready. Then I got released with my team and here I am,” Horner said.
Horner says he can use his experience in his playing career to relate to the young athletes he will be coaching.
“I think the kids will know I have a lot to bring to the table. I have seen the good times and bad times,” Horner said. “I know what it takes to win. I have a Big Ten championship under my belt. Hopefully, anything I can teach them and anything I learn from those coaches will be great.”
