MASON CITY, IA---Diabetes could eventually affect 1 out of every 4 American’s.

That's the estimate of health experts and a Mason City doctor agrees with those who believe the disease is an epidemic in America.

It is estimated that nearly 25 million American's already have it and millions more are on the edge.

They are being described as ticking time bombs because the disease does not discriminate.

Diabetes complications can lead to heart attacks, blindness and even death.

The problem is simply a lack of exercise and a bad diet, which leads to obesity.

Dr. Mark Johnson, who is the Medical Director of Mercy Medical Center North Iowa's Diabetes Center, believes there is value in Bob Greene's 12-week fitness plan presented Wednesday afternoon on The Doctor Oz Show on KIMT News 3.

"It’s Important to do that stuff," said Dr. Johnson, "I think one important thing about diabetes if you got a diagnosis of diabetes you have diabetes. You can reverse the blood sugars, but you always have diabetes.  So you always have that risk for heart disease, so you always have to do the right things even though you do weight loss and exercise you still have that diagnosis of diabetes."

Dr. Johnson recommends early testing if it is in your family.

If you are borderline on developing diabetes, he says it’s critical to see a doctor every year and have your blood sugar checked.
