the recent cooler temperatures are a good reminder that winter is on it's way... and the minnesota department of transportatio n is preparing now. kimt news three's annalisa pardo joins us live to tell us about a new feature you could see on the roads this winter, to keep you safe. tyler and arielle, as you can see the salt pile is ready to go... and in a few weeks so will the new feature on the plow trucks. the trucks are getting what's called a tow? plow, which looks like this... with this attachment at the back of the truck. the new attachmenet can clean two to two and a half lanes at a time... which will give drivers a cleaner road, faster. robert langanki supervises all the snow plow drivers in our area. the tow plows are on trucks in other areas, but he's getting one here in rochester after seeing how bad traffic can get during rush hour. especially with the new machinery, training is extra important before this its going to take an experienced operator, and only a few that will be qualified and skilled to be able to operate this piece of equipment too. langanki says the tow plow will be used for snowfall around 2 to 4 inches, any more might be too much for the plow to pull. live in rochester, the tow plow costs close to 200 thousand dollars... making the snow plow truck, with all its features, about a half million dollar piece of machinery.
