lange. developing story first tonight ? a developing story shaking not just one community... but people across the world. star iowa state golfer celia (theylia) barquin (bar? keen) ? arozamena (a? rose?ah?may?ne? ah) is dead after being attacked while playing a round alone in ames./// police say it happened yesterday morning at coldwater golf links. they were called to the course to investigate a possible missing player after golfers found her bag and no one around it. officers found her body in a pond... with several stab wounds./// the man suspected of killing barquin is in custody tonight ? on a 5?million dollar cash bond. 22 year?old collin richards is charged with first degree murder. he made his first appearance in court today ? and records show he has a history of violence and drug use. according to investigators ? he told an acquantaince he had "an urge to rape and kill a woman" ... he was living in a homeless encampment near the golf course. he has scratches on his face that are consistent with a struggle. police recovered a knife and bloody clothing linked to richards as and this tragedy comes less than one month after a much too similar loss. mollie tibbetts was a student at the university of iowa. her body was found on august 21st after a month? long missing persons investigation. tibbetts was attacked while out on a run in her hometown of brooklyn iowa. an autopsy confirmed she was murdered ? dying from multiple sharp force injuries. two young women attacked and killed in the same number of months undoubtedly brings safety concerns to light.... especially when it comes to college students. kimt news 3's brooke mckivergan spent the day talking with students to get an idea of how these tragedies are impacting them./// katie i got a few mixed responses at rochester community and technical college ? everyone could agree that what is happening to these young women is not okay.xxx "i play tennis alone so i'm kind of like, should i even go play alone anymore?" students at r? c?t?c tell me they are shocked to hear the news "it's scary, it makes me feel like i should always be with someone or have something to protect me in the middle of the daylight when i don't need to." "its scary because i also go jogging during the day time... i am by myself all hours of the day." and while many say (women should avoid going places alone, and always be aware of their surroundings... some men are now feeling that same discomfort. "i golf all the time by myself and never would you think that its not safe to be by yourself on a golf course so it kind of makes you think twice about that." "i don't think gender is part of it i think its like anyone can be taken at any point in the day." part of the conversation surrounding these types of events... seems to circle back to whether women need to be more cautious. "its fair, its not fair, like come on at the end of the day this is the world and at least we just have to worry about this like you have to think about everybody else and what they have to worry about at least im safe or i know i could be safe where other have to worry about you know?" "i get your point but its not fair. i personally one day would like some alone time and get out of the house at like 5 in the morning and just go on a run." so when all is said and done... "you can't live in fear because that's how they win." and knowlege is power. "as our cities grow, more and more stuff like this happens and mustafa tells me his little sister has an app on her phone she can use ? and if she's in trouble ? she just has to push one button and it starts tracking her location and calls 9?1?1./// that might be a good idea for more people look into. thank you brooke. /// well it was a
