Business owners whose shops sit along Broadway Ave. are speaking out about a construction project that some say could force them to close for good.

it's a project that's intended to transfrom broadway avenue into a gateway to downtown rochester. broadway and bikes-stngr-1 broadway and bikes-stngr-2 take a look at this map. the prjoect is impacting a long stretch of north broadway avenue from civic center drive and 13th street northwest. kimt news three's calyn thompson joins us now live from rochester after speaking with local business owners. calyn what did they have to say about the project?xxx broadway and bikes-lintro-2 amy - i'm told there's more than 50 business along north broadway avenue... some of those businesses owners say they attended the committee of the whole meeting last night to learn about the proposed plans... and they tell me they're concerned.xxx broadway and bikes-pkg-1 lowerthird2line:construction concerns local businesses rochester, mn we're very concerned on this stretch of seven blocks. there's 53 businesses that are gonna be impacted and it's interesting because as small businesses, we keep all of our dollars local here. penny bracken has been on broadway avenue with her kismet consignment stores for 15 years. when it comes to the broadway avenue project... she's concerned about accessibility. broadway and bikes-pkg-3 they're gonna tear up the street right to the sidewalk, right to my front door and basically for 18 month to 2 years, i'm gonna be out of businesses. broadway and bikes-pkg-7 some of the plans include adding in medians and bike lanes... which would take out some parking and maybe even entrances. some of the scenarios, they actually block our entrance here with a curb, but i was told that they won't be blocking entrances... mike fish took over fourth generation gingerbread house bakery just two years ago. he says he'd like to see more communication... and individualized concern with each business that will be affected. broadway and bikes-pkg-5 most of their ideas and envisions are in two plans, and a fraction of our ideas and needs and wants and desires are just in a fraction of the less preferred plan. broadway and bikes-pkg-8 it all comes down to time in regards to how this project might affect businesses along its path. are we too late? that's our biggest concern. can we buy more time? i don't know. / broadway and bikes-ltag-2 online documents tell me the proposals for the broadway avenue project will be presented to the city council for formal approval at the regular meeting on may 7th. live in rochester, calyn thompson, kimt news 3. / thank you calyn. planners need city council approval in order to proceed with their final design and keep on schedule to begin construction in 20-19.
