Highway Set for Construction

Worth County, IA-A busy North Iowa highway is set for construction.

Brianna Schroader lives along Highway 65 in Northwood. She travels it everday to Mason City.

"It's busier along highway during work hours," said Shroader.

Schroader admits her ride isn't always the smoothest.

"It's kind of bumpy in spots," said Schroader.

The Department of Transportation believes those bumpy spots are long overdue for a fix-up.

"Well travelled road and it's showing wear we needed to do something," said Pete Hjelmstad, Iowa DOT.

Iowa's DOT is getting ready to make repairs on Highway 65 between Northwood and Manly. You'll still be able to travel it, but it will likely include some extra delays

"There will be spots where you are stopped and a pilot car will lead you through," said Hjelmstad.

The DOT wants to stress to keep your eyes open and expect the unexpected.

"The big thing is to watch your surroundings be prepared for traffic to slow down," said Hjelmstad.

Hjelmstad says about three quarters of all work zone crashes are rear end collisions.

"Traffic will be stopping when yo're not prepared to stop," said Hjemlstad.

Hjemstad says for now travel will be as usual at night. He says daytime work hours will be the most hectic. Schroader says she's got a plan.

"Leaving earlier for school, slowing down," said Schroader.
