MANLY, IA--Rainy weather contributed to a woman being hit by a car in Manly on Thursday night.

At around 9:30 p.m., an unidentified woman was leaving the Bethel United Methodist Church and attempting to cross Highway 9, just East of Highway 65.

Manly Police Officer Aaron Pals described the woman as being in her mid-70.

He said she was headed from the church and going to her home on the North side of the road.

Pals said as the woman stepped from the church's driveway into the road, a minivan headed Eastbound on Highway 9 struck her.

"It was more of a sideswipe than anything else,” said Pals, "not a direct front hit."

Pal said, "The woman said that she was going across the road and insists she looked both ways and had plenty of time to cross the road."

But the driver of the minivan told Pals, "She didn't even see the woman until she struck her."

The woman was struck by the right front quarter panel of the minivan and was hit on her left side.

Pals said she had lacerations on her hands and he doesn't know if any bones were broken.

She was flown to Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.

There is no word on her condition, but Pals said she was awake and conscious.

The unidentified woman behind the wheel of the van is from the manly area.

Neither she, nor her passenger were hurt.

Officer Pals said the-speed limit in the area goes from 30 to 45 mph.

There are no skid marks to measure and Pals was unable to make a determination on speed.

Pals is still investigating the mishap and there is no word on any possible citations.

If there is something to be learned Pals said "Weather conditions, poor lighting conditions, you have to give yourself extra opportunity to get across the street, you never can be too safe, I think the pedestrian would agree with that."
