Forest City, IA- A North Iowa man is sentenced to a decade in prison for hitting his mother with a hammer.

District Court Judge Colleen Weiland is sentencing timothy winter of lake mills to ten years in prison.

He was originally charged with attempted murder.

He plead guilty in December to a lesser charge of willful injury. His mother Cynthia Winter died last summer of natural causes.

Judge Wieland is ordering he serve a minimum of five years.

"He does have established mental health issues, and that's what a judge does is look at all the facts and then come to a conclusion as to what is a fair outcome and we're happy with the ruling and the ultimate disposition of the case," said District Court Judge Colleen Weiland.

Winter will now go to the state correctional facility in Oakdale, IA where he will get evaluated.

The judge is also ordering him to pay more than $26,000 to the crime victims program.
