Mason City, IA- Area city leaders and law enforcement are taking a trip back in time.

They got a ride on some vintage Union Pacific passenger rail cars Wednesday.  It's part of the company's Operation Lifesaver project.

People both young and old took a trip from Mason City to Northwood.  We talked with Worth County Sheriff Jay Langenbau.

He got a front seat look at the dangers at rail crossings.

"It's a little alarming to see how many people try beating the train, and being up here and seeing how much time it takes to have a train stop it's kind of eye opening for us to see," Langenbau said.

Iowa has the 10th highest number of crossing collisions in 2008.  Six people died in rail crashes in Minnesota last year, five people died in Iowa.

Rail workers are telling people to “look, listen, and live.”
