Sheffield, IA- A North Iowa school's leaders are ready to get rid of an old building.

The Sheffield-Chapin-Meservey-Thornton School Board is ready to part with the school building in Thornton.

They have tried selling the property since its closing in the spring of 2008.  After several potential sales fell through, the school board voted this fall to have the building demolished.

"The closing of a school building is a very difficult time, in a community it is a very difficult time for a school system I think at this point the community of Thornton and SCMT schools are ready to seek out some closure on this to have this behind us," said SCMT School Superintendent Darrin Strike.

The school will start asbestos removal next month.  Demolition could start this fall.

A local option sales tax will provide funding for the project.
