NEW HAMPTON, IA---A North Iowa teenager is recovering from hypothermia after she is swept away by flood waters.

At around 7 p.m. on Thursday night, Chickasaw Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a home in the Alta Vista area.

It was learned a 13 year old had been dropped off by an activity school bus and had taken a short cut to get to her house, rather than walk on the road.

While walking in the dark, she stepped into flood waters and was swept away.

She passed through a culvert before she was eventually able to get out of the water.

The unidentified girl went to a nearby farm house and someone called 911.

The teen was treated for minor injuries and hypothermia at a New Hampton hospital before being allowed to go home
