"Swine Flu" Raises Concern for Pig Prices

Thornton, IA- The latest outbreak of flu is sparking some misconceptions and problems for people and pig producers alike.

"So when people hear it they think of pigs," said Sarah Willis, Niman Ranch.

The name is leading many to believe pork products are unsafe and can transmit the strain of flu. Sarah Willis is educating herself on the disease to keep her pig farm safe. The USDA and CDC are assuring folks it's ok to eat pork.

"More and more are realizing it has nothing to do with pork," said Willis.

Many producers believe the name "swine flu" is causing hog prices to drop. Many producers are concerned it could mean more trouble to come. Willis is remaing optimistic.

"As people become more and more educated, I think we'll see the market bounce back," said Willis.

Willis isn't seeing her sales drop off and she doesn't forsee trouble in the future. Now that the government is changing the name to N1H1 to clear up the misunderstanding.

"It makes you realize it's a flu problem not a pork problem," said Willis.
