Students Prepare for College and Debt
Forest City, IA-High school students nationwide are busy getting ready for their big graduation day. Many are also preparing for college life.
"Right now, I'm just trying to get all of my orientation stuff ready and figuring out my financial aid stuff," said Kailey Bunger, Forest City senior.
For two Forest City seniors, scholarships are key.
"Everytime I open an envelope and it said congrats, deep sigh of relief," said Holden Nyhus, senior.
If scholarships don't cover everything, they're going to have look into other options.
"We're going to take out some student loans," said Nyhus.
Both students worry about owing money after college but one financial aid director says it's a common practice.
"They're going to need them to obtain college education," said Duane Polsdofer, Financial Aid Director.
Polsdofer says if you take out student loans it's best to look at your budget and stick with the basics.
"Stay away from wants and stay with needs. You'll be much better off," said Polsdofer.
He says students shouldn't be afraid to borrow money. For those worried about not having a job when they graduate, he says there are options. You can put loans on hold for months but it's up to graduates to talk to their lenders.
Bunger and Nyhus says they are counting on their careers and a hard work ethic to make sure they won't default.
