MASON CITY, IA - Across the U.S. officials are holding annual safety checks on child car seats. But some in Mason City are doing more then just checking, they are learning the ins and outs of seat safety. This week law enforcement and health care professionals are heading back to the classroom learning proper child seat safety.
It's a three day program teaching how car seats work with different vehicles, and how to properly install them. They are learning how to find the expiration dates on the car seats. After six years material on the seats can start to dematerialize.
Officer Kenny Agan tells us the worst type of incident he sees are where child seats aren't properly secured.
"I think you take for granted your manuals you never review them and it's just something you throw them into your glove boxy or throw away once you get one of the car seats but they're actually very important documents you need to keep."
This Saturday at Schukei Chevrolet from 12 a.m. to 4 p.m. the trainees will be helping moms and dads in the community check their child seats.
