MASON CITY, IA---A weekend roof collapse is creating a "huge" amount of work.

The owner of a storage building on Monroe Avenue and his workers are trying to salvage what they can.

Kevin Hardy's Harley Davidson motorcyle is okay, but 2 valuable cars and a recreational vehicle were buried under tons of snow and roofing.

Hardy is sure the possible property loss figure is more than a $100,000 and he had at least a half dozen people renting from him.

"I'm still shocked I still can't believe it happened we've been working diligently over the last week removing ice and snow from other peoples houses and never would have thought this would have happened to me," said Hardy who owns a tree cutting service and handles snow and ice removal during the winter.

Hardy had actually spent time last Thursday removing a snow drift from top of the South end of his row of buildings on Monroe.

He had seen problems with other flat rooves and was pretty sure he had nothing to worry about with the pitched design of the one that collapsed on Saturday.

Hardy said the fortunate part is that this happened during his slow season.

He has 2 crews handling snow and ice calls, while several workers are trying to clear what's left of his building.

Hardy said he eventually plans to erect an even bigger and better replacement building.
