ALBERT LEA, MN--Could the salt used on roads in the winter, affect drinking water.

A new university of minnesota study is suggesting road salt runoff is slowing making its way into lakes and wetlands in the Twin Cities area.

It could also mean future problems for other waterways like those in Southern Minnesota.

Minnesota Department of Transportation managers are apparently concerned.

They have special equipment to help them them gauge how much salt gets put on roadways.

Wayne Golberg, MN-DOT Supervisor said, "so we just try and limit, you know the least amount of salt that we can use to be effective and that's our goal."

The idea is to balance road safety and the environment.
