Mason City, IA- A North Iowa Community is working to preserve a piece of its railroad history.

The Rockford historical society is trying to raise money to restore its more than a century old railroad depot.

It dates back to the original founding of the town.  In the 1980's the building became vacant.

Now volunteers want to bring it back to help younger generations remember what train travel was all about.

"At one time Rockford was the division point for the Rock Island, we had a round house here and the population was 1500 then, then they moved it to Manly and it just kept declining but this was the division point, at the time and we just thought it was worth saving," said Rockford Historical Society co-chair Dennis Ginther.

The Rockford Historical Society is nearly complete with work on the outside of the building thanks to grants and local fundraising.

Now they're focusing on the interior.
