Some area counties will be getting funding to help protect and conserve bodies of water. That includes Mitchell County, which is expecting up to $9,500 to help improve water quality in the Spring Creek Watershed.
The money, from the USDA, provides cost-share dollars for the first year of the project.
One official tells us it could be about a five year project.
It's all about protecting the water from harmful nutrients. “We plan to contribute our part here in Mitchell County by improving the water quality and reducing the nutrients that are delivered here to Spring Creek and eventually to the Mississippi River,” said Dan Bratrud, of the Mitchell County Soil and Water Conservation.
Bratrud says they're hoping to add more filter strips, repairing areas and animal waste storage as part of the project.
