MASON CITY, IA- All the snow and cold could be creating some problems for your roof.

A general contractor tells us you should keep an eye out for ice dams. The blockages happen when snow and ice start to melt on your rooftop and the top layer remains frozen.

It can create a backup of water on your roof and that can lead to leaking.

That's why getting your roof cleared off before warmer weather arrives is important, but it could be a much more difficult task this winter.

General Contractor, Larry Elwood said, "typically you could take a snow rake and rake the snow off your roof, well now because of what's happened with the temps and the way the weather was there might be more ice now and it will be harder to mess with."

Elwood is recommending caution as homeowners try to break ice loose on their rooves. He said heat tape can help.
