HAMPTON, IA - Families in one North Iowa community can look forward to walking over Squaw Creek for the first time in years. Workers are nailing in the final boards of a pedestrian bridge in northeast Hampton.
The city tore down the old crossing about four years ago, because it wasn't safe. The Wisconsin-based construction crew members said they're working hard to build the entire thing in less than three days.
"When we get here there's not a lot other to do than work. We're staying at the campground, so we get done here working, we eat supper, and by that time you're pretty much exhausted," said worker Steven Dietz.
Workers are expecting to finish up Thursday night. Dietz said the style of bridge Hampton leaders picked is one of his company's nicest designs.
