Nashua Grocery Store Set to Close
Nashua, IA-For more than 30 years, Bob Phillips has remained dedicated to the Nashua grocery store. The B and D foods store owner says it's been hard work from the start.
"We've always worked on a narrow margin and we've always did a lot of the work ourselves," said Phillips.
After all of these years, Phillips says he has to close the doors to Nashua's only grocery store.
"I've put an awful lot of myself into this place and I'm getting very little back," said Phillips.
Phillips says profits have been dropping for years. He believes competition from big businesses in nearby towns is what's beating him out.
"Basically the people of Nashua have decided not to shop here," said Phillips.
Customer Ashley Seehase says this store is the most convenient. She stops in here at least once a week.
"To get odds and ends, cleaning supplies and charcoal for grilling," said Phillips.
However, she admits the bulk of her shopping is done out of town.
Right now, Phillips is holding a close-out sale. He's selling everything. The owner says the discounts will get deeper in the coming weeks.
Phillips says he's trying to keep in good spirits as he watches his business split up. He says it's hard not to be bitter when his life's work is gone.
