13 Iowa Hawkeye Football players are in the hospital suffering from a rare muscle disorder.

This condition known as Rhabdomyolysis, is usually caused by excessive workout.

We caught up with an athletic trainer on what it involves.

He tells us it's a breakdown of muscle tissue that causes protein to seep into the kidneys.

It can lead to kidney failure if not treated properly.

However he said since the Iowa players are getting medical attention, there should not be any long term problems.

Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist Kurt Walderbach said, "the recovery is essentially you take time off you flush the kidneys try to hydrate well, get rid of the by products of the damage let muscles recover and repair and then your back to normal activities."

He said the most critical part is identifying the issue.
