Newman Students Honor America's Dead

ARLINGTON, VA--North Iowa Teenagers are pausing to remember America's war dead while in the nation's capitol.

Forty-five Newman Catholic eighth graders from Mason City were present as 4 members of the group laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Sunday afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery in Northern Virginia.

The 4 students were chosen by North Iowa veterans from an essay contest entitled "The Cost of Freedom."

Those selected to lay the wreath were Erik Floden, and Megan Thompson.

Supporting them were Carlie Eckenrod and Rebecca Huberty.

The vets said narrowing down their choice was difficult because so many of the essays were so well written.

During the trip the group will tour a number of attractions including the White House, U.S. Capital, the Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Pentagon and a tour of Mount Vernon.

On their return bus trip they will make a stop at the site of the Flight 93 crash site memorial from the September 11, 2001 attack.
