MASON CITY, IA--Mason City's schools may soon be getting a little safer.

The Mason City Community School District is applying for a "secure our schools grant". If the district is selected, leaders plan to add cameras to about 20 school buses. They're also considering adding a secure entry system to the Washington Early Childhood building. They also plan on updating some of the security equipment at Mason City High School.

"It's a matching fund grant where the feds pay 50 percent and the schools pay 50 percent," said Hal Minear the district's assistant superintendent.

The school district will find out sometime this summer if they will get the money.
