MASON CITY, IA- Geeks young and old are helping Mason City with a YouTube video to attract Google to town.
Mason city wants their video to represent the entire community. It's all to entice Google to pick the River City as one of their broadband test sites. While other cities are singing songs and jumping into water for their required YouTube video.
Mason City is tapping its heritage and drawing on "The Music Man".
It's all about getting Google to pay attention to Mason City.
The first stop in this video tour is Music Man Square where we found "geeky" members of the community marching to "76 Trombones."
Mattie Lee is one of them. She lives in Mason City and said, "it was actually really fun-we had the music and started over them came down."
She came with her mom, decked out in geek attire to make this march and show just how much Mason City means to them.
Abigail Lee said, "I just want it to be a success. I love mason city. I was born and raised here and my kids are born and will be raised here. i just want Mason City to have every advantage it can, if we can be a part of that..we will."
The taping brought out all sorts of community members decked out in bow ties and glasses. You may be wondering about all the focus on nerds, the answer is simply, technology.
Video creator Dave Nutting said, "we're all computer nerds now, we live by the internet."
The Chamber plans on hitting all of Mason City's hot spots as it tries to entice Google to test out its new fiber-optic network here.
It's promising internet connections faster than anyone has right now.
Nutting said, "the faster broadband we have the more options we have as we have as far as being able to serve our community, bring in new businesses."
The Chamber hopes their quirky approach appeals to Google's unique and innovative style.
Nutting said, "I'm hoping they'll take a look at our submissions and say these people are kind of out there they're forward thinking they've done more then just an information video they've done something that's creative."
Now if you missed out on today's video taping there's still time for you to help.
The complete application is due at the end of next week.
