MASON CITY, IA---A Mason City man is receiving probation for attempting to pawn a stolen bullet proof vest last April.

Billy Joe Compton, 20 is pleading guilty to a charge of theft.

In court documents he admitted he bought the law enforcement style vest, from an unknown person even though he knew it was stolen property.

The vest belonged to Justin Allen of Mason City and had been taken from a car.

The court considered the fact that Compton was a youthful offender, his cooperation and significance of his previous record in determining the deferred sentence.

Compton will serve two years of probation and pay a nearly $300 fine.
