Forest City, IA- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating some trees after a Mason City man raised some concerns.
A district forester for the DNR says they want to turn two acres surrounding Pilot Knob State Park's observation tower into its original prairie state.
They want to improve the view from ground at the top of the hill.
Carl Hutchens is concerned about some buckeye trees that would get cut down. He says they are native and endangered. The forester says they likely aren't worth saving.
"I think that we have to look at the balance of what we're trying to do here and that is to save a historically documented savannah prairie area," said DNR District Forester Wayne Fuhlbrugge.
He says the buckeye is native to Iowa, but not in this area. He says even though the trees near the tower will get cut down, there are likely several others near the base of the hill that will survive.
