"I Pronounce You Husband and Husband"
Mason City, IA- Gary Swenson and Dean Genth exchanged vows at Music Man Square Sunday. The Mason City couple says it's a day they didn't think would happen.
"I would have never thought I 'd see this day in my lifetime," said Genth.
Swenson and Genth say the Iowa Supreme Court's ruling is giving their relationship the validation they needed.
"Getting married to have legal recognition of that today is really an affirmation that I am part of the human race," said Swenson.
For years Swenson and Genth hid their relationship. Both say they struggled with their homosexuality. Genth says he was even suicidal until he read a book written by internationally known Reverand Mel White. In the book, the famed pastor shares his battle with accepting his own homosexuality.
"After reading it he decided he could be gay and christian too and that made all of the difference," said Reverand Mel White.
White says he's honored to be officiating a legally recognized same-sex wedding.
"I was grateful to God and the people of Iowa and supreme court for giving us the chance to share the freedoms right's and responsiblites that go with marriage which we never shared before," said Reverand White.
The couple knows there are arguments and opposition against them but no matter what, they're not going to let that take away from this moment.
"Iowa is celebrating today and we are going to be a small part of that," said Swenson.
Opponents of same sex marriage are vowing to raise the issue during next years Iowa legislative session.
