MASON CITY, IA - The end of greyhound racing in Iowa could be near. A House panel approved a measure to end the gambling activity in the state.

The proposal states casinos will no longer have to subsidize race prizes. Which would mean owners won't want to race.

It could also mean a thousand of the dogs trained to run will have to find a home.

Local greyhound lover Pat Wilson says she is part of a group that's ready to foster and find good homes for the dogs if the law ever passes.

"We're not those fanatical people that say absolutely no racing, it's all about the dogs because they run their little hearts out and do their best. Our commitment is to take care of them afterwards."

Now that the House has approved the greyhound racing measure, it will go to the House State Government Committee.

I am very happy to read that the end of greyhound racing in Iowa could be near-am praying this goes through. I live in the UK and have 3 rescued ex racing greyhounds and it is heartbreaking to see them being given away free on various websites with no home checks. Being given to people who use them, either to race on unlicenced 'flapping tracks', kept in sheds, on allotments, used by travellers for coursing and when injured killed inhumanely or dumped. And knowing that those greyhounds who've become to slow or too injured are immediately replace - a very vicious circle.
