MASON CITY, IA – North Iowa bikers and supporters got a big surprise on Wednesday night as they prepared for the annual “Ride of Silence” in Mason City. They got a visit and surprise speech from Iowa Governor Chet Culver.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with those that have been killed or injured while cycling," said Culver (D).
The Governor was in Central Park to help kick off the event after a campaign stop earlier in the evening.
The annual event is to raise awareness about bicycle safety and to remember those injured or killed while biking.
Organizers say the governor's visit was a big surprise, but very helpful to the cause.
"I think it'll give more emphasis to the bicycle safety bill that they're going to be working at it again next year in the legislature," said local organizer Steve Schurtz.
Also showing their support on Wednesday night were Mason City Mayor Eric Bookmeyer, State Representative Sharon Steckman, and State Senator Amanda Ragan. Both of the legislators were strong supporters of the Bike Safety Bill.
"This past year we've had the Bicycle Safety Bill in the Iowa Legislature,” said Schurtz. “Part of the bill was passed and signed by the Governor, and to get that information out to the public is our main intent."
Cyclists in Mason City joined folks around the world in taking the ride Wednesday night. Last year, there were more than 15-thousand participants in more than 300 different locations.
