Future of Farming

ALBERT LEA ---Southern Minnesota farmers got the opportunity to meet with State agriculture leaders to learn about the future of their industry.

The Deputy Commissioner for Agriculture met with folks in Albert Lea to learn which issues matter most small town Minnesota.

Many of those who attended the listening session believe talking about the opportunities and the challenges ahead, is important.

Jerry Demmer is a corn and soybean farmer in Clarks Grove. His crops are still profitable.

But his friends in the dairy and swine business are struggling.

Demmer said, "They need a turnaround here. Otherwise we're going to lose a lot of family farmers that keep the money here in rural America."

The deputy commissioner said as he and other ag leaders make their way across Minnesota, they're hearing frustration about the volatility of livestock prices.
