MASON CITY, IA - Commuters in one North Iowa city are making some roadside donations.

On Thursday, members of the Mason City Exchange Club held their annual “Taking it to the Streets” event.

They were on the corner of 1st St. NW. and Monroe Ave. for most of the day asking folks to donate money for the Third of July fireworks.

Members tell us the fireworks are completely funded by donations from the public, and despite the recession, it seems folks aren't holding back.

"Traffic's actually been very good this morning,” said Exchange member Don O'Connor, “and donations, I'd say, are brisk at best.  So, I'm pleasantly surprised, and we truly do appreciate everyone's support."

The Exchange Club is hoping to bring in around $4 thousand from the event, and with some people dropping $20 bills and more, that could be an easy task.

"Some years we get close, some years we don't, just depending,” said O’Connor.  “Ya know the economy's a little tougher right now, we understand that, but every little bit we appreciate."

If you'd like to donate and didn't make it out, you can donate cans in the bins in front of both Hy-Vee’s and Fairway.

They also welcome folks to stop by and donate at their meetings, every Thursday at noon, at the Holiday Inn.
