CHARLES CITY, IA--A Floyd County home is a smoldering ruin.

Firefighters worked as fast as they could Monday afternoon to save a turn of the century house on the Southwest side of Charles City.

At around 1:30 p.m., someone reported a fire 1864 Gilbert Street.

Owner Ryan Smith said he and his wife were elsewhere at the time the fire began.

Floyd volunteer firefighters and other surrounding departments did what they could to stop the flames from spreading on the two level home.

"When we got here like I said it was fully involved," said Floyd Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ben Chatfield, "and so it took us a little bit to get it setup but we made the best of it and saved what we could."

Chief Chatfield says he is consulting with the state fire marshal and an insurance investigator as he tries to figure out how the blaze began.

Nobody is hurt, but the Smiths did lose their golden retriever in the fire.
