WODEN, IA—A cleaning crew discovery leads to the partial evacuation of a Hancock County town.

On Thursday morning at around 9:30 a.m. workers made a discovery on a shelf in a shed used to store city equipment in Woden.

The workers were not sure if what they’d found were road safety flares or dynamite.

Investigators called in the Iowa Fire Marshal’s Office and determined the items were in fact dynamite.

They recommended the evacuation of homes and businesses in a four block radius.

Fire and Sheriff’s Department members went door-to-door and about 35 to 40 people were kept at a safe distance until 5 p.m.

The Fire Marshal’s Office soaked approximately 70 sticks of dynamite with diesel fuel and then moved them to an open field to be burned.
