MASON CITY, IA - New diabetes statistics that say one in three Americans will have the disease by 2050 may sound shocking, but doctors aren't surprised.
The Centers for Disease Control released the numbers last week, but doctors say they've seen this coming for years.
Unhealthy lifestyles like no exercise and poor eating habits are the main culprit. Doctors say that's something people don't usually like to talk about.
"Even those that don't have diabetes need to be living an appropriate lifestyle and eating healthy because a lot of people just don't do that and think they're not at risk when they actually are at risk," said Dr. Mark Johnson.
The National Institutes of Health Diabetes Prevention Program says a healthier diet and increased exercise could reduce the risk of developing diabetes by about 60 percent.
