CHARLES CITY, IA---A North Iowa family said they have an extra reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving Day weekend.

Ruth and Georgia Mitchell are cleaning up fire damage at their home located on Quince Avenue, just South of Charles City.

Just before ten Wednesday night, Ruth Mitchell was her bathroom preparing to go to bed when she heard the sound of breaking glass.

She knew it wasn't her husband George and when she looked, she saw flames coming in the window on the Southside of their bedroom.

He tried to use a fire extinguisher on the flames and she got water from the bathtub to toss on the fire.

Charles City Firefighters arrived shortly afterward and Ruth said she is impressed by how quickly they responded.

But the fire did serious damage to a wall, a hot tub and the deck.

Ruth Mitchell believes someone was looking out for them and she is glad they were home, "I just thank god it wasn't any worse that it was I just think it was a miracle that it didn't get any worse than it was."

The Mitchell's suspect a short in the wiring to their hot tub's heater might be to blame.

The Charles City Fire Department is still trying to determine the cause.

Ruth Mitchell said the fire won't ruin their Thanksgiving, because their family isn't gathering until Saturday and a daughter lives nearby.
